Imagine driving four hours every time you went to see your doctor or specialist. It’s an experience The South Bend Clinic’s newest allergist, Sohaib Aleem, M.D., remembers all too well from his childhood in Pakistan. His father suffered from Addison’s disease and the trip to see his doctors was a long one. Sohaib learned early on what it was like from the patient’s perspective and realized how much he wanted to help people and make a difference in their quality of life.
Sohaib graduated from medical school in Pakistan and went on to complete his residency in combined internal medicine/ preventative medicine at the University at Buffalo, New York. His immediate family members struggled with eczema and allergies, and that, in part, led him to complete his fellowship in Allergy / Immunology at the University of Iowa. Sohaib also earned his Master of Public Health degree and that background, which includes quality improvement and preventative medicine, constantly drives him to deliver the highest quality of care.
Sohaib is really looking forward to helping both children and adults struggling with various allergic diseases including asthma, nasal allergies, sinus disease, food allergies, eczema, hives and immunodeficiency disorders.
“For me, it’s more of a partnership with the patients,” he says. “With food allergies and eczema, you see the results right away. It’s very rewarding. I develop a relationship with the patient and try to really understand the barriers of not being able to comply with medical advice, and I find ways to break down those barriers. I also really try to understand what is important to them in their care. “
Since moving to the South Bend area, Sohaib caught the Chicago Cubs fan bug that reached fever pitch during the play-off and World Series win. He is also an avid soccer fan of his beloved Arsenal team in the English Premier League.
